Update on the Burma Protests
The situation in Burma is getting worse. The BBC reports that nine are confirmed dead, but diplomats believe the number is much higher. Eye witnesses claim that there are rows of dead bodies in the streets. A Japanese journalist has also been killed by the military, and now Japan is asking for accountability. And to top it off, the Burmese government has shut down all public internet access, so that no news can get out.

Violent Crack Down on Burmese Protests
The BBC World News report on the latest developments on the protests in Burma. The country's military leadership has turned its guns on the people.
According to a report on yesterday's Rachel Maddow radio show, similar events occurred 19 years ago when the people rose up against the government. Back then, the military disguised themselves as protesters and acted out violently, in order to legitimize a military backlash. This resulted in the slaughter of thousands of innocent people, and suppression of the revolution. Well, the dictatorship is at it again. According to sources, the military has recently invested in hundreds of monk's robes and encouraged soldiers to shave their heads, so that they can disguise themselves as protesting monks and repeat the violence of the past.
Meanwhile, Bush has been trying to stick his nose into the situation, because - ahem! - Burma has oil...

Bush Pardoned Himself
CNN's Jack Cafferty took notice of a blurb in a recent bill that Bush proposed to the House, which would retroactively exempt him and his administration from prosecution for war crimes. This video aired just after the Congress passed the bill and before the Senate had a chance to vote on it. The Senate then went on to pass the bill as well. So, Bush has effectively granted himself immunity.

Blackwater Killing Spree in Iraq
Holy fuck. This is one of the most disturbing videos to come out of the Iraq War.
It is a trophy video made by employees of Aegis Security Service, a British Blackwater contractor working in Iraq, and it is allegedly one of four such videos. They recorded themselves on a killing spree, driving down the highway in Iraq and randomly shooting at innocent Iraq civilians for sport, and then set it to the music of Elvis. Sick. Truly and heinously sick.
When you watch this, remember that the Bush administration gave Blackwater a no-bid contract, of $600 a day per mercenary, for their work in Iraq and Paul Bremer, Bush's original viceroy to Iraq, granted them all immunity. The Iraqi government has asked them to leave because of their lawless behavior, but Bush has ignored the request and reinstated them. Blackwater is Bush's secret army, accountable to no law, no justice, no authority. All of this is Bush's responsibility.

Republicans Jumping Ship
Josh Marshall of TPMTV takes a look at all the Republicans, in both the House and the Senate, that will not be running for reelection in 2008. Looks like the Democrats have a good chance to widen their control of the government and maybe actually start to get things done. Wouldn't that be nice?

You can hear him screaming in agony when the cops fired.
Since when does asking a question merit electrocution?

Domestic Violence Caught on Tape
Every 15 seconds in America, a woman is abused by someone she loves.
Diane Sawyer sat down with a woman who suffered years of physical & verbal abuse at the hands of her husband. The son of a bitch had his head planted so firmly up his own ass that he came up with the bright idea of having their 13 year-old son videotape one of his cruelty sessions. He wanted to prove how much she deserved it.
Her crime? Asking him if he wanted lunch...
In the end, the abuser provided her with enough evidence to have him sent to jail under one of the longest prison sentences ever handed down for spousal abuse. (WOOOHOOO!!!)
Ladies, if this is happening to you (and statistically it very well might be!), I want you to grab the biggest frying pan in your house and smash it upside the motherfucker's head right now! Then chase his low-life bullshit ass out of your house immediately and call the police! Domestic violence is unacceptable. Condone it once and it will happen again. And it won't stop until you make it stop.

Performed live with the Seeger Sessions Band on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, June 23, 2006.
Video Response to Osama
I have a weakness for swearing Brits. They make it all sound so civilized...
Anyway, this is a response from Pat Condell of London to Osama's latest 9/11 tape (you know, the one where he was rockin' the Just For Men), in which he invited Westerners to join his special brand of radical Islam. It's scathing and bitchy and all kinds of lovely.
The Price of American Blood
First to volunteer everyone but himself, FOX's Bill O'Reilly. His comments, that 1000 more dead soldiers was completely reasonable, garnered him the top spot on Countdown's Worst Person in the World tally:
Next up to talk out of his asshole, Congressman John Boehner (R-OH), who joined Wolf Blitzer on CNN's Situation Room. He claims that the blood of American soldiers is a "small price" to pay. No word on whether Rep. Boehner will be offering up any of his loved one's for the sacrifice:
And finally - topping even the craziest of the crazies - Philadelphia Daily News columnist Stu Bycofsky, who published an editorial last month entitled, To Save America, We Need Another 9/11. He even went so far as to offer terrorists a list of American monuments for them to target, like the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Rushmore. Stephen Colbert suggested another option in this segment of The Word - Re-Run:
Unless and until these Republican sociopaths are ready to lay down their own lives in defense of their political policies, they really need to shut the fuck up.

The Shock Doctrine
Brilliant short film based on the book by Naomi Klein. It is a study on how politicians and corporations have repeatedly seized on experiences of wide-spread shock to manipulate whole societies into submission.
Pop Has Eaten Itself
This year's "award" show was like watching someone desperately trying to revive half-rotted roadkill. Give it up. MTV is unwatchable. And the "music" it pimps is unlistenable. Both the MTV network and the select group of over-hyped, overexposed, and overrated performers it promotes need to be banned from the airwaves. At the very least, they should be censured for pollution of American culture.
Offense #1 - the Britney mess:
Offense #2 - Kid Rock & Tommy Lee, two dirty hacks in a slap fight:
Offense #3 - the Kanye West temper tantrum:
Offense #4 - Sarah Silverman, the least funny person on earth:
It is clear that the "entertainers" themselves have stopped trying. And if they don't care enough to make the effort, then why should the rest of us give them the time of day? It's over. Everybody pack it up and go home. America doesn't need you anymore.

FOX NH GOP Debate Highlights
TPMTV has put together a highlight reel from last night's Republican Debate. Goes pretty much how you expect it would: posturing, rhetoric, false claims and chicken hawkery. FOX's own polls show that underdog/whipping boy Ron Paul was the winner. But the best part of the whole clip comes in the final 20 seconds. Worth watching just for that alone.

From the 1984 Bari Recital, the definitive operatic aria "O sole mio".
Rigoletto's "Questo o Quella" from the 1988 documentary on Pavarotti's trip to China, Distant Harmony.
A moving performance of "E Lucevan le Stelle", from Puccini's Tosca.
This is Pavarotti in Pagliacci, the role he was born to play, performing "Vesti La Giubba".

Monty Python on Public TV
This is a clip from an in-studio appearance for local PBS affiliate KERA-TV in Dallas, Texas in 1975. Apparently, KERA was the first station in the US to broadcast Monty Python's Flying Circus, after an executive pulled the show from a box of rejected British television programs. This appearance on the station's pledge drive, however, has not been aired since it was broadcast live, and only a portion of it has survived the last 32 years. It is an extremely rare interview and was shot just after Monty Python and the Holy Grail had wrapped production.

Special Comment on Bush's Visit to Iraq
Countdown's Keith Olberman issued a (fierce!) special comment tonight on Bush's continued lies about Iraq and his push for endless war, even beyond his own presidential term. By his own words, Bush is "playing" with our military.
