CrooksandLiars has raw footage from today's transformer blast in Midtown Manhattan. I heard the blast, but I live so far away that I assumed it was just thunder, as it had rained on and off all morning.
For the record - NO. THIS WAS NOT TERRORISM. Just another example of ConEd's ineptitude. Last summer they deserted Astoria, during a blackout that lasted more than a week. Last month, parts of Manhattan were blacked out, including Mayor Bloomberg's neighborhood. And back in the summer of '98 or '99, all the manhole covers down 14th street (a major crosstown thoroughfare that leads directly to the front door of the ConEd plant in Manhattan) blew clear off. So, today's event, while tragic, is nothing new.
