Why Congress Can't Get Anything Done
In the summer of 2007, the Judiciary Committee had issued subpoenas for the testimony of Harriet Miers & Josh Bolton. Then Bush turned around and claimed executive privilege and said they didn't have to show up. Today, Congress convened to address the matter and issue contempt charges against both Miers and Bolton, under House Resolution 982.
First up was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). She laid out the platform of the resolution, why it's necessary, and then pointed out that Bush's executive privilege nonsense doesn't apply.
Next came Representative Robert Wexler (D-FL), who reminded Congress that checks & balances are a primary function of the Legislative Branch of government.
And so, when faced with the fact that they would actually have to do their jobs and uphold the laws they were elected to protect, the GOP decided to throw a massive hissy-fit. Lead by Representative John Boehner (R-OH), the republican members of Congress staged a walk-out.
When you go the polls this November, remember who was willing to work, and who could care less about the Constitution and the rule of law.
UPDATE: I take it back! Congress actually accomplished something today! Democratic members of the House were able to pass HR 982, despite the Republican temper tantrum. Harriet Miers and Josh Bolton have both been sited with contempt of Congress. I guess this means they might be forced to testify now?? The Gavel has loads more video from today's proceedings.

FCC and Media Consolidation
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is trying to fast track new legislation that will allow corporations to own even more media outlets in local markets, despite overwhelming opposition from the American public. This attempt at deregulation is so blatantly corrupt that both democrats & republicans in congress have joined together to say they will overturn any decision by the FCC.

Countdown - Rewriting History
Keith Olberman & Arianna Huffington discuss Karl Rove's recent comments that the US Congress is to blame for the Iraq War and that the Bush Administration did not want them to authorize military force.
The only shocking thing, to me anyways, is that Charlie Rose didn't start singing "Liar Liar" to Rove's face.

Bush Pardoned Himself
CNN's Jack Cafferty took notice of a blurb in a recent bill that Bush proposed to the House, which would retroactively exempt him and his administration from prosecution for war crimes. This video aired just after the Congress passed the bill and before the Senate had a chance to vote on it. The Senate then went on to pass the bill as well. So, Bush has effectively granted himself immunity.

Republicans Jumping Ship
Josh Marshall of TPMTV takes a look at all the Republicans, in both the House and the Senate, that will not be running for reelection in 2008. Looks like the Democrats have a good chance to widen their control of the government and maybe actually start to get things done. Wouldn't that be nice?
